CONVERSE REPRESENTS: NAS
August 13th, 2012 by @lauren_piresThis summer Converse launched REPRESENT; a series of intimate gigs with some amazing acts including Toots And The Maytals, SBTRKT, Santigold, Blur and Best Coast. As the new sponsors on the legendary 100 Club on Oxford Street, Converse thought this would be the perfect venue, carrying on the legacy of the 100 Club stage, which over the years has been graced by Chuck Berry, BB King and The Rolling Stones.
Last Friday Converse closed their Represent 2012 series with the one and only Nas headlining..! And support performances came from Kano, Speech Debelle and Children Of The Night.
BNTL Sisters managed to get their hands on a pair of wristbands for this intimate gig, and BOY, was it intimate.
Nas entered the living room sized venue to The Don, closely followed by his classic New York State Of Mind. Amongst selected tracks from Illmatic and new album Life Is Good, Nas also paid tribute to the late Amy Winehouse with their duet Cherry Wine.
Everybody was glistening with sweat, but it didn’t stop the audience from enjoying his music. And in a weird way it kind of added to the overall experience. The fact that these fans were tolerating the steamy temperatures (I’m talking close to fainting) demonstrated their excitement and dedication they have towards seeing the New York rapper perform live. Never have I seen fully grown men screaming like girls, running into the venue for their fave song, and then running back out for a breather, dripping. Hardcore Nasir lovers.
(I’d taken my camera to photograph, but my lens kept steaming up! Here are some mobile shots)
Big thanks to Converse, Cornerstone and Jeff Horton at the 100 Club for inviting us down. It was an epic night.
Look out for the footage of this gig on the Converse Channel.
